I'm reading a lot about people not liking BTS' story as much. Beyond Two Souls is 10.5 hours for the standard, 12 for main+extras, and 27 hours for completionists. Both games got me genuinely emotionally invested and distressed at times. has Heavy Rain at 10 hours for the average playthrough, 12 hours for main+extras, and 21 hours for completionists (that want to platinum and/or see all variations and endings). If it was the multiperspectival aspect or the detective genre - not so much. So that was another element I liked about both games, that a lot of the mystery and suspense came through how the story was set up and told and that it worked so differently between the two games. BTS isn't told chronologically and it wouldn't work if it was, but at the same time it's all told from the same perspective, while Heavy Rain obviously only works if it's being told linearly, but from different perspectives. One thing I always like to point out is that they work very differently from a story-telling perspective, partly through how the timelines are arranged. Minus multiple player characters, which I liked in HR, but plus the added bonus of controlling something other than humans, which is at the very least interesting. Mechanically, if that was a big factor in loving Heavy Rain - making decisions, the option of plot variation within a certain spectrum and decently varied gameplay segments - which I'm assuming it was, you'll love that in BTS, too. I loved them both as you'll see from this essay, but find them pretty hard to compare. ![]()
